The photo above is taken in the Botanic Gardens, and shows the natural elements in the garden which are not only surrounded by man-made elements such as the lamp-posts, but also with a background of nearby service apartments and the Gleneagles Hospital.

Not mentioning the modern buildings in the background, the lamp-posts in the garden already shows the presence and influence of Man among the natural elements. This makes the whole setting seem “artificial” and that it is not exactly a natural setting. The trees and plants are also planted in a certain pattern or manner, which seems to imply that the positions of all the plants were pre-planned. This also adds to the un-naturalness of the setting in the photo. In the background, the buildings also seem to be not only a stark contrast, but also an eyesore, in relation to the plants in the foreground. They are thus, the biggest flaws in the whole photo, as they are completely removed from the natural elements in the foreground. Even the colour composition of the photo makes the setting look dark and gloomy, reiterating the “artificial-ness” of the surroundings.

On the other hand, the photo also shows the co-existence of nature and the urban society. In the city landscape, there can not only be tall buildings, but also the presence of such parks and gardens, which provide an alternative to the bustle of city life.

The above photo shows a couple shooting their wedding photos in the Botanic Gardens. While they are surrounded by trees, it seems that their environment is largely man-made, when taking into consideration the man-made structures such as the benches and concrete pavements.

While it is not clearly seen in the photo, it was drizzling at the time when this photo was taken. It also shows the power of nature in contrast to the helplessness of Man when in times of bad weather. If it were to rain, the couple’s activities would have to be disrupted due to their inability to control the forces of nature.

In this photo, the couple’s actions are also slightly contradictory. While they chose to have their wedding photos taken in “natural” surroundings, they are still surrounded by man-made structures such as the benches and concrete pavements as mentioned above. Hence, it is difficult to justify the setting as being “natural”.

The photo above depicts a Caucasian family enjoying a picnic in one of the clearings in the garden. One of the main differences between this photo and the other two shown above is that it shows a setting which is not only harmonious, but also filled with joy. This is inferred from the colour composition, which is made up of bright colours such as red, yellow and light green.

This photo shows that in spite of the fact that people now live in urban landscapes, they still enjoy a intimate bond and relationship with nature when they decide to immerse themselves in nature. Compared to the other two photos, the setting of this photo is also devoid of man-made structures such as benches, lamp-posts and concrete pavements. As a result, the scene appears much more natural, instead of being filled with modern elements as shown earlier.

In the hearts of the people in this photo, it is apparent that in their opinion, nature is pleasant and when they are in contact with nature, they are relaxed and free to do whatever they desire. One prominent example is the woman playing with the toddler in the foreground of the photo.
